The villages in the south part of Chios are famous for their medieval style and each one has a unique characteristic. Meet your guide and relax in a comfortable minivan as you enjoy the picturesque Southern Chios on the 40’ drive to Vessa. When you arrive, enjoy a guided walking tour of this beautifully preserved village, learn interesting facts about its architecture as you admire the houses and see the old and new town’s arcaded streets. Enjoy a short break to grab a coffee at a local’s house and get to know about the local lifestyle and occupations.
Enjoy a short drive to Chios Mastic Museum; a unique museum telling the history of Mastic through people’s stories. Through the prism of UNESCO’s inclusion of traditional mastic cultivation on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, emphasis is given to the diachronicity and sustainability of this product of Chios.
Next stop Pyrgi village, a UNESCO protected site. When you arrive wander along the narrow alleys where all the outer walls are decorated with black and white geometrical shapes. Visit the famous mastic groves and have lunch at a local restaurant.
From Pyrgi we continue to Olympi Caves; located 100 meters above sea level with maximum depth55 meters. It is worth noting that the cave is still active even today and although it is relatively small, the interior is full of stalactites and stalagmites is exceptional, making it one of the best of its kind in Greece.
Last stop is Mesta Village. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the middle ages as you explore the well-built narrow alleys, making it difficult for the attackers to find their way through the village. Visit the Christian Orthodox Cathedral church, famous for its pristine decoration and then enjoy a local delicacy called loukoumades.
