Local Chios products you shouldn’t miss

There is no doubt that Chios is a blessed island!

Its fertile soil and exceptional climate are key components in the production of so many different and always high-quality local products. But do you know which local products you shouldn’t miss trying while in Chios?

Of course, Chios mastic is the most well-known product that this magical Greek island produces. Especially since this variety is the only one produced in the world. So, getting some kind of local product made of or with Chios mastic should be on your to-do list before you leave the island!

But this time we will focus on two products of Chios that are of excellent quality and flavor but they don’t get the recognition they deserve. So, let’s change that!

Citrus fruits

The Kampos of Chios releases so many distinct aromas that ‘hit’ you as soon as you step into the green core of the island! The scenery around is just astonishing! Narrow alleys, tall, stone walled trees… so much green so much orange… you’ll feel as if you are traveling in another world! The world where dreams are made of! The variety of tangerines produced in Chios is unique. And even though they face many difficulties and pretty harsh weather conditions until they are ripe, Chios tangerines are in fact the tastiest in the world!

  • Fun fact! In order to protect their crops from the ice-cold winter, farmers light up small fires so the fruits stay warm!

Amanites mushrooms

Amanites are a type of mushroom that grows mainly in the north of the island. And they are at their highest quality and taste during fall. And more specifically as soon as the first raindrops of the fall begin! This type of Chios mushrooms is usually found them pine trees, alone or in groups of 2-3 mushrooms. The Amanites mushrooms are an excellent fried appetizer, or as Greeks call it ‘meze’, accompanied of course by what else? Ouzo!

So, these are some of the local products in Chios that you shouldn’t miss trying. And we highly recommend you to purchase and take with you when you leave the island.
